FAQ

  • Is the Rosary Biblical?

Yes! The rosary is called the “bible in your pocket” for a reason. Each mystery helps you meditate on the life of Christ. Though the word “rosary” does not appear in the bible, the contents of what the rosary is all over scripture.

Hail Mary full of grace” (Luke 1:28). “Blessed are you among women” (Luke 1:42) “Our Father” (Mathew 6:9-13)

  • Where does the Rosary come from?

Short answer: It was given to Saint Dominic by the Blessed Virgin Mary. Long answer: The rosary we are most familiar with today has been forged like a sword. First the Angel Gabriel said the words “Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee”. Hundreds of years later monks had the practice of praying the entire psalms and used pebbles to keep track of the 150 psalms. It later developed into a bead and string prayer known as the “Angelic Psalter” which consisted of Hail Mary’s.

By the 1200s Saint Dominic (founder of the Order of Preachers) was given the rosary by the Blessed Virgin Mary as a tool to fight heresy. This spiritual sword was further sharpened in the 1400s when Saint Dominic of Prussia was able to add the mysteries we are familiar with (joyful, sorrowful, glorious).

By the 2000s, Saint John Paul II added a popular (though debated) 4th mystery (luminous).

  • Is praying to the saints idolatry?

    No.

There is a difference between the intercession that we are asking for through prayer, than the worship that is given to God alone.

There are people that do worship statues or use the word “santo” (saint) to worship demons. This is a practice common in “santeria” and should be avoided.

This should not discourage the faithful to seek the intercession of those who are canonized saints. These holy men and women see the face of God and bring our requests to God as is mentioned in Revelation 5:8.

  • What is the full rosary?

    Each mystery consists of":

    1 - “Our Father”

    10 - “Hail Mary”

1 - “Glory be to the Father”

Saint Louis de Montfort mentions that praying 1 mystery is what is expected of children. Praying all 3 mysteries makes 1 full rosary (joyful, sorrowful, glorious).

Today we also have the luminous mysteries. This would be considered an extra to the original. Though the mystery is debated, praying 4 rosaries is objectively better than praying 3.

At least 1 Apostle’s Creed is suggested and the faithful can pick their particular devotions (Fatima prayer, Saint Michael prayer, Hail Holy Queen, etc.)

  • Are there different rosaries?

    Yes.

Saint Dominic is historically attributed as the founder of the rosary. However, the Blessed Virgin has graced other saint’s with a rosary particular to their religious order.

    For example the:

    - Franciscan Rosary (7 Joys)

    - Servite Rosary (7 Sorrows)

    - Brigittine Crown

While on Café Con Santos we are accustomed to praying the rosary in the model of the Dominicans, it is highly encouraged to look into the other rosaries. Each rosary has a particular gift/grace and is worth exploring.

  • Why should I pray the rosary?

You will increased your devotion to Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Blessed Virgin Mary has made promises of many graces to those that pray the rosary. For example: - The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell. It will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. - Those who have a true devotion to the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church. - The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven.
